INSIST ON PUNK INTERVIEWS:
Gori of CONTRAST ATTITUDE

CONTRAST ATTITUDE is back on the East Coast for the first time in over a decade, bringing their fierce D-beat, wall of noise and a new lineup to the East Coast. I caught up with Gori to talk about the current state of the band, their new release, and the ongoing legacy of Disclose and the first ever 'Kawakami Forever' NYC gigs.

Hello Gori! This is CONTRAST ATTITUDE’S first time on the East Coast since 2014. You guys are touring with a new lineup. Who plays in the band now?

Hi Mike! Actually, our last East Coast tour was in 2013. I still remember how excited we were—it was our first international tour.

We’ve got a new drummer now: Daigo, formerly of Deceiving Society and Ability. He’s joined Hisa on bass and me on guitar and vocals. The three of us are working together as a tight, focused unit.

Guitar/Vocals: Gori

Bass: Hisa

Drums: Daigo

You’ve got a new LP coming out on Desolate Records. What should people expect from it?

This is our first full-length since 2009, and the first with Daigo on drums. His addition has really strengthened the rhythm section—he and Hisa play together with a groove that makes everything feel more solid and explosive.

We’ve stayed true to our roots. It’s still D-beat at its core, but we always try to keep things original. You’ll hear some slower, more deliberate rhythms too. We put a lot into this record and hope many people will check it out.

" We’ve always known Kawakami’s influence reached far beyond Japan."

You were a member of the legendary Disclose. What era did you play with them, and how did it shape your music?

I played bass in the later years of Disclose and did a few gigs with them.

I’ve loved Disclose since the early days of CONTRAST ATTITUDE—I gave Kawakami our first demo and he was always supportive.

His ideas, his sound, his whole approach had a huge impact on me. His influence is still very much alive in what I do today.

The upcoming show is the first U.S. edition of Kawakami Forever. What does that event mean to you?

We’ve always known Kawakami’s influence reached far beyond Japan. Disclose only toured abroad once, and it was here in the States, so being able to perform this tribute here feels very meaningful.

The timing of our tour worked out perfectly. There are fewer bands in Japan now who were active with Disclose back then, so it’s important for us to carry that legacy and share it with U.S. bands who were inspired by him. It really means a lot to be a part of this.

This is your second time touring with PHYSIQUE. What do you like about them?

PHYSIQUE is amazing at building songs and crafting sound. That’s a big reason they stand out in the D-beat scene. You can hear the influence of Japanese bands in their music, but they also bring something unique.

Honestly, I think if Kawakami were still around, he’d be a big fan. I’m really excited to be back on tour with them.

Thanks for the interview, Mike!
